He would like to say that he sits down with her like a grown-up person, drinks his tea, and talks about feelings. But that would be a lie, and Sirius doesn't lie to Lily. Well, most of the times he doesn't. Not unless he really can't face her.

So he stays by the sink like a kicked puppy, staring at his shoes, and as long as he's not looking at her, he can maybe speak.
