Right. Under the sink. With some muggle cleaning powder.
That's when the absurdity of the situation hits him, and he lets go of the locket, dropping it in the box, then taking it out of Lily's hand to deposit it out of sight. This already feels better. What was he thinking, coming to her all dramatic?
"Sorry I gave you a fright," he tells her once the cupboard is closed. "Shit, you're right, that thing does something to you. I didn't realize. I thought it was just... you know. Regulus."
Hastily shutting the cabinet door once the box had been put back beneath the sink Lily felt her shoulders relax as she sighed in relief. "That thing's just awful," grimacing she ran a hand through her hair, pushing it out of her face while taking a step backward from the sink and thus, the locket.
Taking another deep breath she resumed fixing them both a cup of tea, passing him his before she took a seat at her tiny kitchen table.
He would like to say that he sits down with her like a grown-up person, drinks his tea, and talks about feelings. But that would be a lie, and Sirius doesn't lie to Lily. Well, most of the times he doesn't. Not unless he really can't face her.
So he stays by the sink like a kicked puppy, staring at his shoes, and as long as he's not looking at her, he can maybe speak.
"I can't believe he did some idiotic, self-sacrificial thing by himself. Instead of coming to me. I know we weren't speaking, but... Did he honestly think I'd turn him away if it was life and death?"
It was hard to imagine losing a sibling. Even though she and Petunia lived drastically different lives Lily liked to think that if one turned to the other for help, they would give it. Frowning she set her tea aside and wrapped an arm around his shoulders, giving him a light hug.
"Sometimes people can't see things like that, especially if they're full of fear, and," she fell silent and scowled at the cabinet under the sink. "I'm already a little afraid, I can't imagine scared he was, faced with that thing in whatever setting it was being hidden away in?" Lily shuddered a bit, crossing her arms over her chest and shuddering some, as though a chill had run through the room.
"It's terrible, I'm so sorry it happened, but if sending this to you was his final action, then we'll find a way to make it right."
He lets her touch him, and even puts one arm lightly around her, just for comfort. Somewhere deep down, he knew she'd get it. Somehow, when it came to Regulus and his idiocy, Lily always seemed to get it.
"Since where are you so wise?" he grouses, but there is no bite to it. He doesn't even have the heart to make a dog pun in his head. "Thanks, Lily. I'm just... Fucking hell, I'm so mad at him."
"Since always," Lily's eyes narrowed at him almost immediately, the shadowy artifact under the sink briefly forgotten in favor of drawing far enough away from him to playfully push his arm.
Then, like it always would for as long as they had to carry it, the Horcrux's presence made Lily's thoughts turn back to the dark reality of the situation, though thankfully not with the same morbidity that they might have had, had the thing been closer. "We ought to figure out how to find out what we're dealing with and soon, it might not be safe staying for very long if this thing is important to You-Know-Who." Not that she had any idea where would be safe, but that didn't change the fact that they were a couple of sitting ducks, completely lacking a clue where to go from here.
