A nice cup of tea would forever serve as a strong draw for Lily, who only wanted to be left to sit quietly with one while reading a good book - no matter how firmly life insisted on throwing a steady stream of obstacles in her path that kept that idea closer to fiction than to reality. Tonight there was no pretending she had any hope of such an idyllic future. It was far too late for reading, and while the only appropriate course of action was sleeping she was instead doing anything but.
As though to prove she didn't care Lily hadn't bothered to brush her long hair, instead fighting it back into a bun that sat on top of her head messily, like an afterthought. She threw her robe over her pajamas and left the bedroom she had been given when she had been named Head Girl at the beginning of the year. She found it an interesting adjustment, having been in the same dorm room since First Year, and all the quiet was probably at fault for why on nights like this one, sleep was a bit hard to find.
Shuffling into the Gryffindor Common Room she was already frowning obstinately, though there could be no doubt the expression deepened when she laid eyes on Sirius, already waiting. "This is mental," she objected quietly, and she had to wonder if it sounded as half-hearted as she meant it. She preferred to play things by the book and shied away from sneaking around and breaking the rules despite the interesting puzzle getting around those rules presented.
He'd been down in the commons for a bit now, waiting for his adventure party guest to come down out of her tower and join him. Honestly, he's half expecting to get stood up. After all, you don't get the Head girl to come out of hiding so easy, right?
Standing there, he sent his last note off to her, waiting to hear back or not. He took a nip off his flask, capping it and hiding it in the hooded sweater under his robes. A sweater he had stolen from James at some point. Half his clothing had been barrowed from James since he and the other had lived together for a bit there.
He made sure the flask was out of sight, a bottomless spell cast on it, so it never ran out. NO sense getting that taken away by the Head Girl. Sure, she might join him, but she might night as well.
His rumbled hair was clearly uncombed, stringy in his face, and his sneakers were red, like their house. A muggle brand that would have pissed his mother off if she knew he had them at all. Not that, that mattered anymore.
When Lily showed up at the foot of the stairs of the dorms, Sirius' Heart skipped a beat.
She did it. She bloody well did it. The mile on his face was lopsided and firm. "This is what people our age do when they can't sleep." He whispered back, moving to push off a couch back to greet her. He can't believe she showed up. James is going to be SO pissed with him in the morning when he boasts about this. IF he boasts about it at all.
On the very long mental list of things that annoyed her about Sirius Black, at the very top, was that ridiculous smile of his. It was, perhaps, the worst thing she had ever seen, and she went to great lengths to avoid the sight of it. Usually, it was a simple matter of staying away from him and his terrible friends. It wasn't as though she didn't want to avoid James Potter at all costs, and with avoiding James came avoiding Sirius, which suited her quite nicely.
However sometimes, when you're seventeen, stupid choices present themselves, and there no other option than to take them. She wouldn't admit it to him, but she knew he was right - this was probably something that people their age did.
Still looking incredibly obstinate about the entire thing Lily shuffled over to the exit from the tower, waiting for him. "Alright, but we have to be quick. No dawdling." Even as she said it Lily had a sneaky suspicion there would be quite a bit of dawdling.
Sirius Black had a world famous smile that was rivaled only by James Potter. His smile, when he put it on, could say so many things. When it was natural, it was a thing of charm and calm. When it was forced, it tended to tell you he was about to hex someone. Sirius' Smiles could be recorded in a book and given to every fawning girl in school as a lesion plan for a year.
Thankfully they didn't do that. So his smiles were saved. He was smiling now, pleased as punch that she showed up at all. Shoving his hands into his rob pockets he trotted up next to her and towards the door.
"Yes, ma'am. One nice, quick, easy trip to the kitchen for tea and cookies and nothing else. In and out. On my honor." Which meant he was going to dawdle as long as possible.
When Sirius couldn't sleep, he did things. Tonight it was Lily and the Kitchens for Tea and Cookies and maybe other snacks. And talk. Couldn't help to wind her up a bit. He doubted he could win a lip chapping snog. As much as he'd kill for that.
Once they were out of the tower and in the corridor her shoulders stiffened, as though the reality of the insane thing she agreed to had finally sunk in, a moment too late to turn back around and call the whole thing off. She was a principled person who behaved in school, but she still had a streak of valor that at times could be almost brash, there was no backing down from a challenge once it was issued, even though usually those challenges were more above board and academic in nature.
Exchanging a glance with Sirius in the dimly lit corridor she listened hard for anything that might indicate they weren't alone out there. She didn't want to think about what might happen were she caught like this, as Head Girl. She was allowed to walk the halls any time, for the purposes of patrolling, but being out in the middle of the night with another student for no reason other than a cup of tea? That wouldn't look very good in front of the Headmaster, she was quite sure of that.
"Well?" She squinted at him. "You're the criminal mastermind, lead on."
He didn't have the map on him. He didn't NEED the map anymore. He knew every corner of this place and seemed to be good at avoiding people with out it. He didn't need James's cloak either. For some reason, he wanted to be impressive to Lily, so taking the led was easy.
He knew if he really wanted to impress he could shift forms, but one, he was sure she would not be impressed by THAT, and another he learned it against the laws of the wizarding world, for Remus, not for impressing young ladies. it would be so easy though.
When she squinted at him, he cracked a smile back, starting to dart off the way they needed to go, paused, lunged back in and took her hand, leaning in to say "Stay close." And pulled her, a joyous feeling radiating off him, like a dog. Like a Padfoot.
He moved them through the halls with ease, making her paused only twice, and hide just once in a cubby behind a statue when he thought a teacher was coming. It was from there that he took her to the Kitchen Entrance.
He leaned in close to whisper. "Know how to get in?" And nudged her. "Tickle the pear."
She began to object when he leaned back to grab her hand, but he looked so pleased with himself that the words died on her throat, replaced instead with a mystified little laugh as she allowed herself to be led further into the dark castle.
Every time she had needed to hide Lily had begun to second guess herself, but then when it was time to run again the thought left her mind. It was like she knew she was doing the wrong thing, and for once, was allowing herself the luxury of not caring. Tomorrow, she would resume her course on the straight and narrow, but tonight would be for cups of tea and bewildering moments presented by way of a young man who seemed far too thrilled with what was going on for it not to be infectious to some degree.
Lily laughed when he nudged her and she shook her head, "I know, I know," but gracious, was he excited about it, excited enough to make her chuckle again as she tickled the pear so the doorknob revealed itself. Surprising herself with her own boldness Lily didn't wait, pulling the door open and stepping inside without waiting for Sirius. She had only been to the kitchens a few times before this, but never so late at night.

Damn it all, she really wanted a cup of tea.
